# Intel commits $5.7bn to Xeon production in Ireland

**[The Next Web](https://daily.dev/sources/tnw)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Intel is investing €5bn ($5.7bn) to upgrade its existing fabrication facilities at Leixlip, Ireland, rather than building a new fab. The upgrade will install leading-edge equipment and integrate separate modules into a unified production environment to manufacture Intel 3 silicon, specifically Xeon 6 processors and next-generation Xeon chips for AI server workloads. Most of the spend is due by end of 2027, representing roughly 30% of Intel's planned $17bn capex for 2026. The investment adds several hundred jobs to Intel's existing 4,900-person Irish workforce. Intel frames the move as supporting EU tech-sovereignty goals, while Ireland's government highlights the strategic importance of foreign investment, which accounts for about 11% of the country's labour market.
