# Intel IPU8 Support Upstreamed In Linux 7.4 For Nova Lake Laptops

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Intel IPU8 camera support has been merged into the mainline Linux kernel, with Nova Lake laptops debuting next year. The unified IPU6 driver also gains IPU7 and IPU7.5 (Panther Lake) support, while a separate IPU7 driver option was merged last year. This lands as part of the Linux 7.4 media pull, which adds new sensor drivers for Sony IMX576, OmniVision OS02G10/OV05C10/OG0VA1B, Samsung S5KJN5 and Himax HM1246. It also adds Maxim GMSL2/3 support (MAX9296A, MAX96717, MAX96724), a Rockchip RK3576 MIPI capture driver, and NXP i.MX95 and Qualcomm CSI2 driver additions.

## Questions this post answers

### Does the Linux kernel support Intel's IPU8 camera hardware for upcoming Nova Lake laptops?

Yes, IPU8 enablement work has been merged into the mainline Linux kernel as part of the media subsystem pull for Linux 7.4. This lands ahead of Nova Lake laptops which are expected next year. At the same time, the unified IPU6 driver also gained support for IPU7 and IPU7.5, used in Panther Lake hardware.

### What is the difference between Intel's separate IPU7 driver and the IPU6 driver in Linux?

Intel originally shipped a separate IPU7 driver option, merged into the kernel last year. In Linux 7.4, IPU7 and IPU7.5 (Panther Lake) support was instead folded into the unified IPU6 driver, consolidating it alongside the newly added IPU8 support rather than keeping a standalone IPU7 driver.
