# Intel's gaming handhelds went from a punchline to rivaling AMD, and the chip is only half the reason

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 8 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Intel's journey in gaming handhelds went from an embarrassing debut with the MSI Claw (Meteor Lake) in early 2024 to a genuine competitive threat. The original Claw lost to the ROG Ally on nearly every metric, hampered by a laptop chip poorly suited to low-power handheld use and immature Arc graphics drivers. Intel spent years rebuilding its Arc driver stack, and the Lunar Lake-based Claw 8 AI+ in 2025 reversed the narrative by outperforming the ROG Ally X. Now, the Arc G3 Extreme — Intel's first chip purpose-built for handhelds, based on Panther Lake on the 18A process — promises 50% faster graphics than Lunar Lake with 40% better performance per watt. However, AMD's ecosystem advantages (FSR ubiquity, SteamOS, broad handheld adoption) remain significant, and the first Arc G3 device (Acer Predator Atlas 8) won't ship until October with pricing still unknown.
