Linkerd, a service mesh technology, now supports the Kubernetes Gateway API through the GAMMA initiative. While Gateway API was originally designed for north-south (ingress) traffic, GAMMA extends it to handle east-west (service-to-service) traffic. With Linkerd, HTTPRoutes can attach directly to Kubernetes Services instead of only to Gateways, enabling advanced internal traffic management features like retries, circuit breaking, rate limiting, mTLS, and observability for pod-to-pod communication.
