# Introducing Delta Lake Table Features

**[Delta Lake Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/delta-lake)** · 8 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Delta Lake replaces its legacy integer-based reader/writer protocol versioning scheme with Table Features, a discrete feature-based compatibility model. Instead of bundling multiple features per protocol version and requiring cumulative implementation of all prior features, clients and tables now declare individual features explicitly. Table Features itself is enabled via the final legacy protocol versions, reader version 3 and writer version 7, introduced starting in Delta Spark v2.3.0 and fully demonstrated in v2.4.0. The post explains how existing tables transparently upgrade when features like Change Data Feed or Deletion Vectors are enabled, and outlines what developers of Delta Lake clients need to implement to support the new scheme. Support currently exists only in the reference Delta Spark connector, with Delta Standalone and other non-Spark clients still in progress.

## Questions this post answers

### What are Delta Lake Table Features and how do they replace protocol versions?

Table Features are a discrete, feature-based compatibility scheme that replaces Delta Lake's legacy integer-based reader/writer protocol versioning as the primary way to manage table capabilities. Instead of version numbers bundling many features cumulatively, tables and clients declare individual features explicitly via readerFeatures and writerFeatures lists in the Delta log, enabled through the final legacy protocol versions: reader version 3 and writer version 7.

_Teams tracking Delta Lake protocol changes can follow releases like this on daily.dev._

### Which Delta Spark version first supports Table Features and what protocol versions enable it?

Delta Spark v2.3.0 is the earliest version supporting Table Features, with v2.4.0 used to demonstrate the behavior. Table Features are enabled through reader version 3 and writer version 7, the last legacy protocol versions Delta Lake introduces; enabling a feature like Deletion Vectors upgrades a table to these versions and adds explicit readerFeatures and writerFeatures fields to the protocol action.

_Developers planning a Delta Lake upgrade can track version-specific changes like this via daily.dev._

### Do existing Delta Lake tables need manual upgrades to use Table Features?

No, existing tables do not need explicit upgrading because the Delta Spark client transparently matches legacy protocol versioning with table features behind the scenes. Manual protocol version upgrades remain optional. New clients only need to claim support for the latest protocol versions plus the appendOnly and invariants features, which are required by the earliest reader version 1 and writer version 2.

_Anyone maintaining Delta Lake clients can keep up with protocol changes like this through daily.dev._
