# Introducing network traffic inspection

**[ngrok Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/ngrok)** · 8 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Ngrok launched a cloud-based Traffic Inspector in developer preview, giving teams centralized visibility into HTTP traffic across all endpoints and agent types (standalone agent, SSH reverse tunnels, SDKs, Kubernetes Operator). Unlike the old local inspect interface at localhost:4040, which only worked with the classic agent and couldn't show traffic from load-balanced Edges, the new inspector collects data directly from ngrok endpoints in the cloud. It defaults to 3-day metadata retention, with an opt-in for full request/response capture that admins can toggle without restarting agents. Planned additions include replay and replay-with-modifications, advanced filtering/search, and purchasable longer retention.

## Questions this post answers

### How does ngrok's new Traffic Inspector differ from the old local inspect interface at localhost:4040?

The new cloud-based Traffic Inspector collects traffic data directly from ngrok endpoints rather than individual agents, so it works across all agent types including SSH reverse tunnels, language SDKs, and the Kubernetes Operator, and it can show traffic from load-balanced ngrok Edges, which the local localhost:4040 interface never fully supported. It can also be toggled on and off without restarting agents.

_Teams weighing tunneling and traffic-debugging tools can track tool changes like this via daily.dev._

### What is the default data retention period for ngrok's new Traffic Inspector developer preview?

The developer preview captures traffic metadata by default with a 3-day retention period. Admins can opt in to full traffic event capture, recording complete request and response data, and ngrok plans to offer purchasable longer retention periods in the future.

_daily.dev helps developers evaluating observability tooling stay current on retention and capture options._
