VolksEEG is an open-source volunteer project aiming to build an FDA-cleared clinical electroencephalogram (EEG) machine with all designs freely available for others to manufacture. Founded by a medical device engineer and a neurosurgical anaesthesiologist, the project centers on the TI ADS1299 8-channel, 24-bit biopotential ADC. Key goals include democratizing the medical device regulatory process, making low-cost EEG devices globally accessible (e.g., for monitoring anesthesia depth), and openly documenting technical, safety, and regulatory decisions. The project is volunteer-driven and currently seeking C# developers for the PC user interface. This introductory post kicks off a blog series that will cover hardware architecture, patient isolation, galvanic isolation, FDA regulation, and the many engineering challenges involved.
