# Introducing Umbral - A Batteries-Included Web Framework for Rust

**[Medium](https://daily.dev/sources/medium_js)** · 14 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Umbral is a new batteries-included, model-driven web framework for Rust, currently pre-1.0. It lets developers declare a data model once and automatically derives database migrations, a typed ORM, an admin UI, REST endpoints, OpenAPI docs, and now an optional GraphQL API from that single declaration. Built on proven Rust libraries like axum, sqlx, tower, and async-graphql, it uses a plugin architecture so features like auth, sessions, admin, REST, and GraphQL are optional and composable. Safety defaults include explicit GraphQL exposure, separate read/write opt-ins, parameterized SQL, and CSRF protection. The framework targets SaaS backends, internal tools, admin-heavy apps, and CRUD-plus-business-logic systems where wiring many libraries together is a pain point. It is published on crates.io and actively seeking feedback.
