# ipcpipeline: Splitting a GStreamer pipeline into multiple processes

**[Collabora Blog](https://daily.dev/sources/collabora)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

The ipcpipeline GStreamer plugin enables splitting a single media pipeline across multiple OS processes, primarily for security isolation. It introduces two elements — ipcpipelinesink and ipcpipelinesrc — that communicate over a Unix pipe or socket, forwarding buffers, events, queries, and messages. The key differentiator from simpler IPC mechanisms (like fdsink/fdsrc or RTP) is that the split pipelines behave as a single unified pipeline: state changes, messages, and queries are transparently forwarded, following a GstBin model. This master-slave architecture allows one master pipeline to control one or more slave pipelines, enabling scenarios like isolating a network parser from a privileged hardware decoder. The plugin is part of gst-plugins-bad and includes documentation and examples.

## Questions this post answers

### How does the GStreamer ipcpipeline plugin differ from using fdsink/fdsrc or udpsink/udpsrc to connect pipelines across processes?

Unlike fdsink/fdsrc or udpsink/udpsrc, ipcpipeline makes two separate processes behave as a single unified pipeline. The ipcpipelinesink element acts as a GstBin containing the entire remote pipeline, so state changes, events, queries, and messages are transparently forwarded between processes. This means existing pipeline control logic requires no modification — no custom IPC layer is needed to manage the second pipeline.

_Developers building GStreamer-based media apps with process isolation track ipcpipeline patterns and alternatives on daily.dev._

### What is the master-slave relationship in GStreamer ipcpipeline and which side controls state changes?

In ipcpipeline, the pipeline containing the ipcpipelinesink element is always the master and controls state changes in the slave pipeline. The downstream portion of the split pipeline is the slave. Multiple slave pipelines can be attached to one master, and multiple ipcpipelinesink elements can connect to the same slave — the slave follows the state closest to PLAYING among all connected masters.
