Built in Rust, it shares traits with the Shai-Hulud worm but adds more sophisticated evasion techniques including an eBPF kernel rootkit, Tor-based C2, string obfuscation, and a modified UPX packer. IronWorm steals a wide range of developer credentials — cloud keys, npm tokens, SSH keys, and AI API keys — and self-propagates by republishing compromised packages to npm and injecting malicious GitHub Actions workflows. OX Security found it infected 36 packages with ~32K monthly downloads before being mitigated.
