Classic McEliece, a code-based post-quantum cryptographic algorithm developed by UK company Post-Quantum, has been included in the ISO/IEC 18033-2 standard for asymmetric ciphers. The standardization enables broader, interoperable adoption across ISO's 177 member states. The algorithm, built on Professor Robert McEliece's 1978 cryptosystem using error-correcting codes, is recommended by national security agencies including Germany's BSI and its Dutch counterpart. Real-world deployments include quantum-safe VPNs tested by NATO and battlefield-ready drone communications with Czech defence manufacturer STV Group. The move comes amid growing urgency around Q-Day threats and Harvest Now, Decrypt Later (HNDL) attacks, with some experts estimating current encryption could be broken within three years.
