# Issue #495: TanStack's smaller React for the browser — React Status

**[React Status](https://daily.dev/sources/reactstatus)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Den Odell benchmarked ten design systems, including MUI, Mantine, Ant Design and React Spectrum, by opening a 249-country dropdown and selecting 100 boxes at once. With the CPU slowed 4x, Mantine opened it in 84ms and Ant Design in 134ms, while MUI and React Spectrum took over 200ms and froze the UI past his 100ms budget. React Spectrum's culprit was React Aria measuring options one by one and forcing layout each time; Den filed an issue and a fix is already in review. Ant Design's dropdown is a good pattern: it virtualizes the list while keeping the highlighted option available to screen readers. Separately, a React.lazy and Suspense quirk means a lazy component suspends on its first render even when its code is already loaded, and React reveals suspended content at most once every 300ms. On r/reactjs, commenters pondered who needs TanStack's Redact, and one tester found re-renders cost about twice the CPU across two production sites.

## Questions this post answers

### why is opening a dropdown with many options slow in React Spectrum

React Spectrum's dropdown slowdown comes from React Aria measuring each option one by one and forcing a layout recalculation every time. In a test opening a 249-country dropdown with the CPU throttled 4x, React Spectrum took over 200ms, freezing the UI past a 100ms budget. An issue was filed and a fix is already in review.

### which React UI library has the fastest dropdown performance under heavy load

In a benchmark opening a 249-country dropdown and selecting 100 boxes with the CPU slowed 4x, Mantine opened it in 84ms and Ant Design in 134ms, both well under a 100ms budget target, while MUI and React Spectrum exceeded 200ms and froze the UI. Ant Design also virtualizes its list while keeping the highlighted option accessible to screen readers.

### how much does TanStack Redact slow down re-renders compared to not using it

One tester measured that re-renders cost roughly twice the CPU with TanStack's Redact across two production sites. The finding came up in community discussion questioning who needs Redact and how it differs from Preact.
