n8n founder Jan Oberhauser made the case at the Raise Summit for building the orchestration layer between AI models and enterprise systems rather than competing on models themselves. The company's model-agnostic approach, enabled by its fair-code Sustainable Use License, lets customers self-host and avoid vendor lock-in. With boards now treating AI provider dependency as existential risk, n8n reports 1.4M+ enterprise customers including Mercedes-Benz and Vodafone, and recently received investment from SAP at a $5.2B valuation. Oberhauser argues that only ~5% of enterprise AI efforts deliver real value, and winners pair LLMs with deterministic logic and human oversight rather than treating AI as the whole system.
