# It's Time to Upgrade to the New Firebase Crashlytics SDK!

## Summary

Firebase is urging developers to migrate from the legacy Fabric SDK to the Firebase Crashlytics SDK before the Fabric SDK is sunset on November 15th, after which apps still using it will stop reporting crashes. The new SDK captures about 30% more Android crashes (twice as many on the day of the crash), ships a much smaller Gradle plugin (down from 20+ MB to 100 KB) with faster build checks, adds Catalyst, App Clips, and watchOS community support on iOS, speeds up dSYM symbol uploads from ~12 minutes to ~45 seconds, and lets iOS, tvOS, and macOS apps share one Crashlytics project dashboard. Initialization code is also simplified to align with other Firebase SDKs.

## Questions this post answers

### When does the Fabric SDK stop reporting crashes and I need to switch to Firebase Crashlytics?

The legacy Fabric SDK was sunset on November 15th, after which apps still using it stop reporting crashes entirely. Developers needed to migrate to the Firebase Crashlytics SDK, which reached general availability in June, before that date to keep receiving crash reports.

_daily.dev helps mobile developers stay ahead of SDK deprecation deadlines like this one._

### How much smaller is the new Firebase Crashlytics Gradle plugin compared to the old one?

The Crashlytics Gradle plugin was reduced from over 20 MB to only 100 KB, and it added task configuration avoidance and improved up-to-date checking to speed up Android build times. It also supports modern Android Gradle Plugin features like disabling mapping file uploads per flavor or build type.

_Track Android build tooling improvements like this one on daily.dev before your next release._

### How much faster is dSYM symbol upload with the new Firebase Crashlytics SDK on iOS?

Uploading a 600 MB dSYM file dropped from an average of 12 minutes down to about 45 seconds with the new Firebase Crashlytics SDK's improved upload-symbols conversion speed. This benefits iOS teams with large debug symbol files who previously faced long upload times during builds.

_iOS developers weighing crash-reporting SDK migrations can follow updates like this on daily.dev._
