## Summary

A staff engineer at Picnic shares how they tackled chronic latency and GC issues in their Java-based modular monolith serving over a million customers. The root cause was accidentally disabling compressed ordinary object pointers (compressed oops) by exceeding 32GB heap, and cold JVM starts causing latency spikes during deployments. Three fixes delivered a 60% latency reduction and 36% heap reduction: re-enabling compressed oops by reducing heap below 32GB, upgrading to Java 25 and enabling compact object headers (shrinking object headers from 12 to 8 bytes, reducing heap by ~33%), and introducing synthetic JVM warm-up load before pods go live to pre-compile hot paths via JIT.
