ARM, x86, and RISC-V represent three distinct processor architectures for single-board computers, each with different tradeoffs. ARM dominates mobile and embedded markets with excellent power efficiency (1-15W) and mature Java support through OpenJDK and Pi4J. x86 offers maximum compatibility and performance but consumes more power (10-65W) and requires active cooling. RISC-V is an open-source architecture gaining traction, with official OpenJDK support but currently 2-3x slower than ARM equivalents. Java runs well on all three platforms, with ARM offering the best ecosystem maturity for embedded development, x86 providing desktop-class compatibility, and RISC-V representing an experimental but promising open alternative.
