This malware, identified by researchers from Black Lotus Labs, is a variant of the cd00r backdoor and poses severe challenges to detection due to its stealthy operational tactics. J-Magic remains dormant within the infected devices until it receives a specific 'magic packet', which triggers its activation. Once activated, it establishes a reverse shell that enables remote control over the network. This technique allows the attackers to evade traditional detection methods since the malware operates solely in memory and lacks endpoint protection on these devices. Juniper routers configured as VPN gateways and those with exposed NETCONF ports are prime targets for this malware. The backdoor utilizes RSA key encryption to ensure secure communication between the device and the attacker, further complicating efforts to detect and mitigate the threat.
