# Just Because You Can Run MongoDB on Kubernetes Doesn't Mean You Should

## Summary

Running MongoDB on Kubernetes involves more than just deploying pods — it means owning storage, backups, upgrades, scaling, and failure recovery. For some teams this is the right call, but for others a managed database service is simpler and more practical. The post frames the real question as an operational decision based on team capability and workload needs, not just technical feasibility, and points to an engineering guide that examines the trade-offs without prescribing a single answer.

## Content

A few years ago, the answer seemed obvious to me.

If everything else is running on Kubernetes, why not the database too?

The more production environments I worked with, the more I realized it's not that straightforward.

Running MongoDB on Kubernetes isn't just about deploying pods. It's about deciding who manages storage, backups, upgrades, scaling, and recovery when something goes wrong.

For some teams, Kubernetes is the right place for MongoDB.

For others, a managed database service is the simpler and more practical choice.

The interesting discussion isn't whether Kubernetes _can_ run MongoDB.

It's whether Kubernetes is the right operational choice for your team and your workload.

I came across this engineering guide that looks at the trade-offs instead of assuming there's a single right answer. If you're evaluating MongoDB deployment options, it's worth a read:
