# Kaizen #4: Overhauled homelab

**[Lobsters](https://daily.dev/sources/lobsters)** · 14 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A detailed personal account of overhauling a homelab setup over two years. Covers migrating from a Zimaboard running NixOS to a decommissioned HPE DL380 Gen10 server with dual Xeon CPUs and 288 GB RAM running Debian. Includes a full home network rewiring project using Ubiquiti UniFi gear (UCG Ultra + U7 Lite APs), running 500m of Ethernet cable through walls, ceilings, and underground conduit to the garage. The new self-hosted stack includes Jellyfin, Immich, Syncthing, Dokploy for Docker management, Uptime Kuma, Beszel, Grafana+Loki for monitoring, Linkding for bookmarks, and NetBird for mesh VPN. Remaining work includes setting up automated Restic backups and adding more HDDs.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 3 discussions and 18 comments across hackernews, lobsters (as of 2026-07-24).

**TL;DR:** The community is generally appreciative of the homelab writeup, but Lobsters commenters raised substantive concerns about placing server hardware in an uninsulated cold-roof attic in Bergen's humid climate, and also noted that the stated reason for leaving NixOS (Restic backup complexity) was a misunderstanding of available NixOS options.

**Sentiment:** 45% positive · 35% mixed · 20% skeptical

**The case for**

- The detailed network rewiring and self-hosted stack is seen as a solid, well-documented homelab build worth sharing.
- Commenters offered useful hardware suggestions like adding an Intel GPU for media transcoding at low cost.
- AudioBookShelf was enthusiastically recommended as a complementary self-hosted service.

**The pushback**

- Placing the server in an uninsulated cold-roof attic risks hardware damage from temperature swings, high humidity, dust, and potential condensation.
- The reason given for abandoning NixOS (difficulty with Restic/cron) reflects unfamiliarity with NixOS options rather than a real limitation of the distro.
- The attic location could also cause ice damming or mold issues if the server heat melts roof snow.

**By community**

- hackernews (mixed): Minimal engagement; only two comments suggesting adding an Intel GPU for media encoding, no broader discussion.
- lobsters (mixed): Positive reception of the post overall, but substantive debate about the safety of the attic server location and a correction on the NixOS/Restic rationale.

**Hottest debate:** Whether placing server hardware in an uninsulated cold-roof attic in Bergen is safe given humidity, temperature fluctuations, and condensation risks.

**Open questions**

- Will the attic environment (cold roof, humidity, dust) cause premature hardware failure?
- Could the server heat in the attic contribute to ice damming or mold problems in winter?

**Highlights**

> Nice post. But.. That's a "cold roof". An uninsulated loft with open ventilation, meaning the air up there is pretty much the same as the air outside. And Bergen is a cold and wet place. The equipment might not thrive up there come winter.

> Cold is ok, freezing cold and wildly fluctuating temperatures (depending on how the sun hits the roof) is not ok. Humidity will also fluctuate a lot, which is bad. Edit: I’m not saying the equipment *will* die come winter. It might work fine for years! But it will probably fail a good bit earlier than it would in better conditions.

> As a homeowner whom has had to deal with all kinds of annoying stuff; I'd also just be worried about creating heat in the attic in general. Assuming Bergen gets snow then that snow might melt (possibly up that whole joist cavity), and then immediately freeze when it gets into the gutter, creating a risk of ice damming. Could also potentially introduce mold issues due to the heat difference resulting in condensation. I'm doing something not entirely dissimilar but still keeping the hardware within the conditioned space, but bumping the conditioned space out more into the attic.

> Of all the reasons to move away from NixOS Restic backups are an odd one. It's reasonably easy to configure with [`services.restic.backups`](https://search.nixos.org/options?channel=26.05&query=restic&type=options#show=option%253Aservices.restic.backups)

> If you’re self hosting audiobooks, I can’t recommend AudioBookShelf (server) and AudioBooth (ios client, https://apps.apple.com/app/id6753017503) enough! I’m not affiliated to either of the projects but just a happy user of both!
