# KDE Linux Making For Easier First-Run Experience Of Java & DOS Apps

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 1 min read · 3 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

KDE Linux's July 2026 status report highlights a new 'Package Compatibility Helper' tool that improves the first-run experience for downloaded applications. When a user downloads a Java program from Flathub that can't run, the tool prompts to install a Java runtime (JRE). It has also been extended to handle DOS applications by prompting to launch them via DOSBox. The helper is designed to be extensible for other runtimes and emulation layers. Other July work included QA and testing improvements, kernel hardening tweaks, dropping unused kernel modules, socket activation for CUPS, and bug fixes.

## Questions this post answers

### What does the Package Compatibility Helper in KDE Linux do?

It detects when a program downloaded from Flathub can't run because the system lacks a needed runtime, then prompts the user to fix it. For Java applications it offers to download a Java runtime environment (JRE), and for DOS applications it offers to launch the program via DOSBox. Support for additional runtimes and emulation layers is planned as a future extension.
