**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 4 min read · 18 upvotes · 3 comments

## Summary

KDE Plasma 6.7 released on June 16, 2026, bringing back classic KDE 4 themes (Oxygen and Air) with light/dark/twilight variants, per-screen virtual desktops after 21 years, and a new CSS-based Union theming engine in tech preview. Other highlights include a global microphone mute hotkey, quick light/dark toggle, revamped Discover software center, HDR improvements, new Wayland protocols, and Intel overlay planes support. The 6.7.1 point release followed a week later with crash fixes and KWin improvements. Plasma 6.7.2 targets a variable refresh rate crash on multi-monitor setups. Looking ahead, Plasma 6.8 development is underway with notable changes including dropping X11 entirely, enabling triple buffering for NVIDIA GPUs by default, and low battery notifications in full-screen apps.

## KDE Plasma 6.7 is out

KDE Plasma 6.7 landed on June 16, 2026. The headline features are genuinely interesting, and a few of them have been a long time coming.

### Per-screen virtual desktops (21 years in the making)

This one's been requested since 2004. Multi-monitor users can now switch virtual desktops independently on each screen rather than having all monitors flip together. If you've ever wanted to keep a reference window pinned on one monitor while cycling through workspaces on another, this is the feature for you. It's a meaningful productivity improvement, and honestly one of those things that makes you wonder why it took this long.

### Oxygen and Air themes return

Two themes from the KDE 4 era are back. Oxygen and Air now ship as full Global Themes with light, dark, and twilight variants. Whether you find this nostalgic or just useful, they're there if you want them.

### Union: a new theming system (tech preview)

Plasma 6.7 introduces Union, a CSS-based theming engine that aims to unify styling across Plasma, QtQuick, and QtWidgets. It's disabled by default and explicitly a tech preview, so don't expect it to be stable yet. But it signals where KDE's visual consistency work is heading.

### Other 6.7 additions

- **Global microphone mute hotkey** - finally a system-wide mute that works across apps
- **Quick light/dark theme toggle** - easy switching without digging through settings
- **macOS-style special character input** - hold a key to see accent variants
- **Vietnamese lunar calendar support** in the Digital Clock widget
- **Big Screen UI** for living room PCs
- **Revamped Discover** software center with reduced visual flickering during update checks
- **Better print queue management**
- **HDR improvements** and new Wayland protocols
- **Intel overlay planes support**
- **Virtual monitor for screen sharing** (useful for streamers who want to share a dedicated virtual display)
- **Hide from screencast** option for individual app windows

## Bug fixes across the 6.6, 6.7, and 6.8 branches

KDE has been running three active branches simultaneously, which means a steady stream of fixes landing in parallel.

### Plasma 6.6.6 fixes

- KWin crash when rapidly power-cycling monitors
- XWayland clipboard issue causing app lag after screen lock
- Crash when refreshing nearby Wi-Fi networks
- Incomplete theme color changes when toggling between light and dark themes (KDE Frameworks 5.27)

### Pre-release 6.7 fixes (before June 16)

- Crash when changing monitor layouts during login or waking from sleep
- Infinite keyboard brightness OSD loop on certain laptops after lid close
- Window drag bug that could strand windows off-screen (reported since 2024)
- Qt widget glitch in the System Tray
- Freeze caused by AVIF icon images in .desktop files
- Renamed desktop files visually disappearing when using multiple Activities
- KRunner search result quality improvements
- Freeze when quickly switching months in the Digital Clock widget
- VNC screen-sharing issue where Ctrl and Alt modifiers weren't sent correctly

### Plasma 6.7.1 (one week after launch)

The first point release came quickly. Notable changes:

- Game controller input plug-in disabled by default
- Smooth blend effect when switching global desktop themes
- Various KWin bug fixes
- Nightlight made optional in kwin-x11
- Fixes to the Union theme engine
- Crash fix in xdg-desktop-portal-kde's clipboard code

### Plasma 6.7.2 (July)

The most significant fix here is KWin's most common crash, caused by variable refresh rate handling in multi-monitor setups. Also included:

- KDE Info Center crash fix for certain NVIDIA GPUs
- Improved full-screen video playback for Chromium-based apps via a Wayland buffer handling workaround
- Fixes for select AMD GPU setups
- Optimized X window shape querying
- Plasma Big Screen fixes

## What's coming in Plasma 6.8

Plasma 6.8 is Wayland-only. X11 session support is being dropped, which has been planned for a while. A few things already in development:

- **Low battery notifications in full-screen apps** - if you're gaming on battery, you'll actually see the alert instead of missing it
- **Triple buffering enabled by default for NVIDIA GPUs**
- **Manually-triggered wallpaper slideshows**
- **Crash fix when ejecting audio CDs** from Dolphin or Audex
- **Better dark GTK2 theme detection**
- **Flatpak Microsoft Edge support** in Browser Integration
- **Meta key support** to trigger KWin's Overview screen (via Frameworks 6.28)
- Two more KWin crash scenarios in the Overview effect fixed

The X11 removal is the big structural change. If you're still on an X11 session, 6.8 is the deadline to sort that out.
