Plasma 6.7, expected before the end of 2025, will be the last release to ship an X11 session. After that, Wayland is the only option. The decision is backed by actual usage data: telemetry from Plasma 6.6 shows over 95% of users are already on Wayland, and that share has grown with each release. Practically no KDE contributors are developing or testing on X11 anymore either, which makes maintaining those code paths increasingly difficult to justify. Dropping X11 sessions doesn't mean X11 apps stop working. XWayland stays in, so legacy applications and games that haven't been ported to Wayland will still run inside a Wayland session. The KDE login manager will also continue to support X11 sessions from *other* desktop environments - just not KDE's own. What actually gets removed is the X11-specific code in Plasma Shell, System Settings, and device configuration. That cleanup reduces technical debt and, according to the developers, opens the door to performance improvements that were harder to implement while maintaining two separate code paths.
