# KDE Plasma 6.8 enters maintenance mode ahead of October 14 release

**[Collections](https://daily.dev/sources/collections)** · 3 min read · 1 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

KDE Plasma 6.8 has entered maintenance mode with only four known regressions, putting it on track for an October 14 release, preceded by Beta 2 on September 24. Recent fixes address a KWin crash from titlebar buttons, a login hang caused by monitors with non-standard VCP ranges (notably the Samsung Odyssey G60SF), a Menu Editor crash, and broken French unit conversion in KRunner. KRDP now drops queued frames when the encoder outpaces the client, reducing remote desktop latency. Other changes include improved on-screen keyboard handling, clearer clipboard settings, Wayland commit-timing protocol support in KWin, an overhauled Spectacle screenshot tool, and triple buffering by default on Nvidia GPUs.

## Overview

KDE Plasma 6.8 is on track for a stable release on October 14, which also happens to coincide with KDE's 30th anniversary. The project has entered maintenance mode with only four or five reported regressions, which is a good sign for stability this close to release. Beta 2 is out now as the final beta before stable.

## Remote desktop gets lower latency

KRDP, the KDE remote desktop component, now drops queued frames when the encoder is outpacing the client. In practice this means stale frames don't pile up and latency stays lower during remote sessions. It's a small change with a noticeable effect if you use Plasma remotely.

## Memory leak fix in Beta 2

Beta 2 depends on Plasma-Wayland-Protocols 1.23, which fixes a KWin Wayland compositor memory leak that was causing `kwin_wayland` to balloon to around 2.2GB of RAM after roughly two weeks of uptime. Normal usage sits around 0.3GB, so this was a significant regression that's now resolved.

## Union theming engine expands

The Union theming engine, introduced as a public tech preview, now extends to QtWidgets-based apps like Dolphin and Kate. It's still a preview, but it's maturing and covering more of the desktop with each release.

## Bug fixes across the board

Several crashes and hangs have been squashed heading into stable:

- A KWin crash tied to titlebar button interactions
- A login hang triggered by monitors with non-standard VCP ranges, specifically called out with the Samsung Odyssey G60SF
- A Menu Editor crash when deleting three or more items
- A KWin crash during Alt+Tab game switching
- A wallpaper D-Bus crash
- Invalid Xwayland-session.d config files no longer block KWin from launching

French unit conversions in KRunner searches were also broken and have been fixed.

On the less critical side: the Kup backup tool's progress display is more accurate, desktop portal dialogs are more polished, and notifications now write to disk less frequently.

## Other changes in 6.8

- Overhauled Spectacle screenshot tool
- Default triple buffering for Nvidia GPUs
- vRAM usage optimizations
- Dwell clicker support on Wayland
- Commit-timing protocol support in KWin
- Multi-GPU improvements
- New `kscreenctl` command-line tool
- Server-side drop shadows
- Improved on-screen keyboard handling in the Input Method widget
- Clearer clipboard settings for image data and MIME actions

## Plasma 6.9 already in early development

Work on Plasma 6.9 has started in parallel. The first visible change is better warnings when renaming files or folders on the desktop, which is minor but suggests the development cycle is already moving forward.

## Timeline

Plasma 6.8.0 stable is expected October 14.

## Questions this post answers

### When is KDE Plasma 6.8 being released?

KDE Plasma 6.8 is scheduled for release on October 14, with Beta 2 arriving on September 24. The release entered maintenance mode with only four reported regressions, indicating a relatively stable cycle ahead of launch.

### What does KRDP's frame dropping change do in KDE Plasma 6.8?

KRDP, the KDE remote desktop component, now drops queued frames when the encoder outpaces the client instead of forcing the client to work through a backlog of stale frames. This results in lower latency during remote desktop sessions in Plasma 6.8.

### What causes the KDE Plasma login hang fixed before the 6.8 release?

A login hang was triggered by monitors with non-standard VCP ranges, with the Samsung Odyssey G60SF identified as the specific monitor causing the issue. This was fixed as part of the bug-fixing work leading up to Plasma 6.8's maintenance mode.
