Keeril Makan, a professor of music composition, has been appointed MIT's vice provost for the arts, effective February 1. In this role, he will provide strategic leadership for the arts across the Institute, working with various arts units to strengthen connections between artistic practice, research, education, and community life. Makan previously served as head of the Music and Theater Arts Section and associate dean for strategic initiatives, and helped launch a graduate program in music technology and computation. He is also a critically-acclaimed composer and recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship.
