# Ketogenic diets may increase cancer risk in the small intestine

**[MIT News](https://daily.dev/sources/mit)** · 5 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A new MIT study published in Nature finds that ketogenic diets may increase cancer risk in the small intestine, contradicting assumptions drawn from earlier research showing the diet protects against colon cancer. Using genetically predisposed mice, researchers found that tumor growth in the small intestine is driven by fatty acid oxidation activating PPAR proteins, which accelerate stem cell proliferation — not by ketone bodies like BHB as previously theorized. Notably, the same diet suppressed colon tumors, revealing starkly opposite tissue-specific effects within the same gastrointestinal tract. The findings suggest commercial ketone supplements would not replicate either the risks or benefits, and have particular relevance for patients with inherited conditions predisposing them to intestinal cancer.
