Previously, Nix users were effectively blocked from using KVM in GitHub Actions, which prevented running NixOS tests — a core part of the NixOS ecosystem that requires KVM for virtualization. This change also unlocks other VM-based workflows like running Firecracker microVMs in CI. KVM is available on larger paid runners and, per testing, also on public projects.
