Microsoft Azure has announced several major compute infrastructure updates. Azure Cobalt 200, the next-generation ARM-based CPU purpose-built for the cloud, delivers up to 50% higher per-core performance over Cobalt 100, with new VM families including high-memory (MP series) and dense local storage (LP series) profiles. Cobalt 200 is positioned for cloud-native workloads and agentic AI, offering better agent sandbox spawn rates and higher concurrency density. The latest Azure Boost generation is now GA with Intel V7 VMs, bringing 400 Gbps networking, 20 GB/s remote storage throughput, and 1M IOPS. A key new feature, Guest RDMA, enables direct memory-to-memory transfers between VMs bypassing the OS and CPU stack, showing 2.2x throughput and 3x time-to-first-token improvements for distributed AI inference versus TCP. New Intel (DSv7, ESv7) and AMD (DAv7, EAv7, FASv7) general compute VMs are also GA with significant generational performance gains. On the security front, Azure Integrated HSM (AIHSM) is now GA, providing FIPS 140-3 Level 3 certified hardware-backed key storage local to the node, and confidential VM live migration for Intel TDX is coming soon.
