The Rust Foundation has launched the Rust Foundation Maintainers Fund (RFMF), a program to provide stable, long-term financial support for Rust Project maintainers. Formalized through RFC #3931, it establishes a new Funding team and a 'Maintainer in Residence' program — inspired by the Python Software Foundation's Developer in Residence model — where selected maintainers are funded (typically near full-time) to work on critical parts of Rust such as the compiler, standard library, Cargo, and Clippy. All proceeds go directly to maintainers. Individuals can donate via GitHub Sponsors; companies can donate or contact the Foundation directly. The first Maintainer in Residence hire is expected in the coming months. The initiative is partly driven by key maintainers losing employer-backed funding due to budget shifts in the industry.
