A hardware hacker retrofitted a leaky antique player piano with MIDI-controlled solenoids, making it play any MIDI file while keeping the original mechanism intact. The build uses a Raspberry Pi Pico (RP2040) driving 88 solenoids via MOSFETs and shift registers, with PIO-based PWM for velocity/volume control and staggered pulse timing to manage power draw during chords.
