Developers spend so much time writing prompts instead of building &amp; shipping software. This consumes significant engineering bandwidth and slows down the process.
The core idea of Loop Engineering is to eliminate developer intervention altogether through agentic automation.
In the software development context, this includes tasks such as:

Verifying the working of unit tests.
</li>
<li>
Ensuring the coverage is above a threshold.
</li>
<li>
Running the linters.
</li>
<li>
Executing stress tests and guaranteeing no performance impact.
</li>
</ul>
To remove developer intervention, the developer would state the success criteria and the agentic system would verify whether the criteria is met after making the code changes. It would continue until the criteria is met.
Once developer intervention is eliminated, the agent becomes autonomous and works until the task is done.
We can define Loop Engineering as - The art of designing autonomous systems that work towards a goal without human prompts.
As Boris Cherny, the creator of Claude Code said - “I don’t write prompts any more. I write loops that self-prompt Claude Code”.

Let's Understand Agentic Loop Engineering!

Success criteria are the real engineering work in these loops. Tests and coverage thresholds are useful, but they can still reward the wrong behavior. I’d include bounded retries, cost limits, and a clear stop condition so autonomy does not turn a bad assumption into an endless loop.

This is interesting. I would like to ask, when would be a good time to intervene again, or do we not intervene anymore. I’m kinda new in loop engineering.

A loop needs an explicit failure budget as much as a success criterion. Coverage thresholds and green tests are easy for an agent to game accidentally by weakening assertions, excluding files, or optimizing the metric rather than the behavior. I would freeze acceptance tests outside the agent’s write scope, cap time and cost, classify repeated failures, and require a human handoff when progress stalls. Autonomy is credible when the system can prove both why it stopped and what it was not allowed to change.

Great video! I can see a lot of potential for reducing engineering toil with this approach. Curious to see how these patterns evolve beyond CI workflows.
