Benchmarks comparing Linux kernel versions from 6.6 LTS (late 2023) through the upcoming 7.1 release show a 13% performance improvement (geometric mean) on the same AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X hardware over roughly three years. Testing was conducted on a System76 Thelio Major workstation with 64-core Zen 5 processor and 128GB RAM, using Ubuntu Mainline Kernel PPA for reproducibility. Linux 7.1 also shows solid gains over Linux 7.0 with no notable regressions.
