# Linux 7.3 Deprecates Many Older 32-bit ARM Platforms, Orphans Hundreds Of Drivers

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Linux 7.3 merges new SoC support including Apple M3 Pro/Max/Ultra (boot-only, no GPU driver yet), Samsung Exynos 1580, Canaan K210, Sophgo SG2000, Qualcomm Shikra, and Altera Agilex72. An Apple M1 power-saving improvement saves about 1 Watt during s2idle. Separately, the kernel marks many older 32-bit ARM platforms as deprecated - 22 legacy board files, Cortex-M3/M4/M7 and ARM1136r0 support, and several binary formats - which will orphan hundreds of drivers once actually removed in a future 7.4+ release. Nothing is removed yet in 7.3 itself.

## Questions this post answers

### What 32-bit ARM platforms are being deprecated in the Linux 7.3 kernel?

Linux 7.3 marks 22 of the remaining 28 legacy ARM board files predating devicetree (old Intel and Marvell chips) as deprecated, along with support for Cortex-M3/M4/M7 and ARM1136r0 CPU cores covering 25 machines, plus be8, be32, oabi, and iwmmxt userspace binary formats. Nothing is removed yet; removal patches are being tested for a future 7.4+ release, after which hundreds of associated drivers can also be removed.

_daily.dev helps kernel maintainers track deprecation timelines before they turn into removal surprises._

### What new SoCs were added to the Linux kernel in version 7.3?

Linux 7.3 adds mainline support for the Apple M3 Pro/Max/Ultra, Samsung Exynos 1580, Canaan K210, Sophgo SG2000, Qualcomm Shikra, and Altera Agilex72 with Cortex-A720 cores. The Apple M3 enablement only allows booting to a console since GPU drivers and many other features are not yet wired up for these Macs on Linux.

### Does the Apple M3 have full Linux support in kernel 7.3?

No, Apple M3 Pro/Max/Ultra enablement in Linux 7.3 is limited to basic boot-to-console functionality. GPU driver support and many other features are not yet wired up, so the machines are not ready for usable day-to-day use on Linux.
