# Linux 7.3 Expected To Drop The FreeVxFS File-System Driver

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

The FreeVxFS read-only Linux kernel driver for the Veritas VxFS file system — historically used by HP-UX and SCO UnixWare — is being removed from the mainline kernel, targeted for the Linux 7.3 merge window. Maintainer Christoph Hellwig queued the removal patch, citing only one known user/contributor in the past 15 years and the growing noise generated by automated bug checkers and AI coding agents flagging issues in rarely-used legacy code. Users who still need FreeVxFS access can remain on an older kernel or maintain the driver out-of-tree.
