# Linux 7.3 will boost minimum framerates by 7x on older CPUs, which is perfect in this hardware crisis

**[XDA Developers](https://daily.dev/sources/xda-developers)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

A new commit merged into Linux 7.3 by kernel developer Peter Zijlstra flattens cgroup CPU scheduling into a single runqueue and adds new cgroup weight distribution modes (up, max, concur, tasks), fixing longstanding cgroup scheduling issues like mishandling of reniced tasks. Benchmarks on an aging Intel Core i7-2600K with an AMD Radeon RX 580 running Shadows Awakening showed minimum FPS jump from 4 to 29 (about 7x), average FPS rise, and a sharp drop in max frame latency, smoothing gameplay on older hardware. Since Linux 7.2 just released, the fix won't reach the release channel for at least a couple of months.

## Questions this post answers

### What scheduling change is coming in Linux 7.3 that improves gaming performance on old CPUs?

Linux 7.3 merges a commit from kernel developer Peter Zijlstra that flattens cgroup CPU scheduling into a single runqueue and introduces new cgroup weight distribution modes: up, max, concur, and tasks, with concur as the default. This fixes long-standing cgroup scheduling bugs, including mishandling of reniced tasks, and improves how CPU time is distributed under load.

### How much does the Linux 7.3 cgroup scheduling fix improve minimum FPS on an old CPU?

Testing on an Intel Core i7-2600K paired with an AMD Radeon RX 580 running Shadows Awakening showed minimum FPS rise roughly 7x, from 4.0 to 29.0, while average FPS also increased and maximum frame latency dropped sharply. The top-end frame rate stayed about the same, but the worst-case stutter improved dramatically, producing smoother gameplay overall.

_Developers benchmarking scheduler changes can follow real-world results like these on daily.dev._

### When will the Linux 7.3 scheduler improvements be available in a stable release?

Since Linux 7.2 had only just released at the time the Linux 7.3 commit landed, the scheduling fix will take at least a couple of months to reach the stable release channel. The change first merges into the mainline development kernel before flowing down to distributions.
