# Linux 7.3 x86/mm Lands Patches To Greatly Improve Latency-Sensitive Workloads

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Linux 7.3's x86/mm pull request merges patches that reduce the time TLB flushing code runs with interrupts disabled, easing scheduling latency for latency-sensitive workloads. The work, originally developed by Bytedance engineer Chuyi Zhou, allows preemption during IPI completion waits and cut P99 max preemption-disabled time to around 1.5ms after ten rounds of review, down from spikes of up to 16ms observed on a 16-core production machine. Intel's Dave Hansen, who submitted the pull request, flagged it as worth watching for regressions.

## Questions this post answers

### What changed in the Linux 7.3 kernel to reduce TLB flush latency?

Linux 7.3 merges x86/mm patches, originally developed by Bytedance, that allow preemption during IPI completion waits for TLB flushes such as arch_tlbbatch_flush and flush_tlb_mm_range. Previously smp_call_function callers blocked with preemption disabled, causing scheduling latency spikes up to 16ms on a 16-core production machine; after the patches, P99 max preemption-disabled time dropped to around 1.5ms, a reduction of up to 90%.

_Teams tuning real-time or DPDK-style latency-sensitive workloads can track kernel changes like this via daily.dev._

### Why does TLB flushing cause scheduling latency on x86-64 Linux systems?

On x86-64, TLB flushes are performed via inter-processor interrupts (IPIs), and smp_call_function callers wait for these to complete with preemption disabled. During process exit or page reclaim, many IPI operations must be awaited on the current CPU, which increases scheduling latency for other threads, reaching as high as 16ms on a 16-core machine in Bytedance's production environment before the fix.

_Engineers debugging kernel scheduling latency issues can follow related patches and discussion on daily.dev._
