# Linux 7.4 Introduces DMA-BUF Support To I/O Path With IO_uring

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 2 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Linux 7.4 merges infrastructure enabling DMA-BUF support in the kernel's I/O path via IO_uring. DMA-BUF lets device drivers and subsystems share hardware memory buffers without CPU copies, and this feature is opt-in for files that implement a new file operation. Pavel Begunkov led the work through eleven rounds of patch review. Only NVMe block devices are supported so far, with DMA-BUF buffers for block devices able to reach up to 4GB. The API builds on io_uring's registered buffers, usable with IORING_OP_READ_FIXED and IORING_OP_WRITE_FIXED requests.

## Questions this post answers

### What is DMA-BUF support for IO_uring in Linux 7.4 and what devices does it work with

Linux 7.4 merges infrastructure letting IO_uring use DMA-BUF buffers directly in the I/O path, avoiding CPU copies. It's opt-in per file, requiring a new file operation to implement, and in this initial series only NVMe block devices are supported. The dmabuf is registered as an io_uring 'registered buffer' and used with IORING_OP_READ_FIXED and IORING_OP_WRITE_FIXED requests, with buffers up to 4GB.

### Who developed the DMA-BUF IO_uring patch series merged into Linux 7.4

Pavel Begunkov led the work, which went through eleven rounds of patch review before merging into Linux 7.4. He described it as an opt-in feature for files that implement a new file operation, built on top of io_uring's registered buffers and a new iterator type passed through the I/O stack, with extra infrastructure for lifetime management and invalidation.

_Engineers following kernel I/O patch histories can keep up with contributors like Begunkov on daily.dev._
