# Linux Dealing With Apple's Wild Mess Of Sensors On Apple Silicon SoCs

**[Phoronix](https://daily.dev/sources/phoronix)** · 3 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Linux contributor James Calligeros is working to fix Apple SMC hardware monitoring (HWMON) support for Apple Silicon SoCs on Linux. The challenge stems from Apple's inconsistent sensor layout across M-series chips — some sensors are universal, others are device- or SoC-specific, and some vary even within the same SoC depending on the device. The proposed solution uses a hierarchy of .dtsi files to compose sensor sets per device class, SoC, and device, avoiding duplication in Device Tree definitions. The patch series was posted to the Linux kernel mailing list and covers temperature, voltage, power, and fan speed data. Work on booting Apple M3 and M4 hardware on Linux is also ongoing in parallel.

## Questions this post answers

### Why is Linux hardware monitoring for Apple Silicon Macs still incomplete?

The Apple System Management Controller exposes temperature, voltage, power, and fan speed data through hundreds of sensors using an inconsistent FourCC key-value system, where sensor keys vary by SoC and even by specific device model. Required Device Tree nodes for the SMC hwmon driver were missing from the mainline kernel, so a new patch series organizes sensors into layered dtsi files (common, SoC-specific, device-class, and per-device) to add support incrementally.
