The Linux kernel was created by Linus Torvalds in 1991. Each combination of customisations is called a distribution or distro for short. Each of them has been optimised for a specific purpose, or just for fun. Another alternative is to install Steam, or better still, SteamOS if you are a gamer with a flair for Linux.
