StatCounter’s June 2026 data shows Linux desktop share in North America jumping to 10.61-10.65%, up from 3.56% in May. That’s not a trend. That’s a cliff. And a single-month leap of 7 percentage points is the kind of number that makes data people nervous before it makes Linux fans celebratory.
The bot-traffic explanation is the obvious one. StatCounter counts browser hits, not installed machines, and a sudden spike that large almost certainly has automated traffic mixed in. Steam’s hardware survey, which actually requires a human to launch a game, tells a different story and doesn’t show anything close to 10%. Lunduke flagged this directly: Cloudflare numbers are similar to StatCounter, Steam disagrees. That gap matters.
But here’s where it gets interesting: even if the spike is noise, the underlying direction isn’t. Windows dropped from 64.66% to 57.63% in the same data. Windows 10 support ended. RAM got expensive. As one commenter put it bluntly: “Not anything Linux did” - it’s Microsoft’s decisions pushing people out, not Linux pulling them in.
Microsoft seems to know this. They’re actively working to cut Windows 11’s memory footprint on 8GB RAM machines, speeding up File Explorer and Search through lighter allocators. That’s a defensive move, and it’s aimed squarely at the budget hardware segment where Linux has been quietly eating.
The discourse is splitting predictably. Half the replies are “Linux year of the desktop finally” energy. The other half are methodological skeptics pointing out that StatCounter has always overcounted Linux because bots and servers skew browser-based metrics. Both camps are probably right about something.
The honest read: 10% is almost certainly inflated. But Linux at 4-5% in North America, growing steadily as Windows 10 EOL pushes users toward cheaper hardware that runs better on open-source software - that story holds up regardless of whether this particular number is clean.

All MS had to do was not suck. Stop with the push to the corporate idea of innovation. Even Apple stopped innovating with what people actually want. With their OS’s becoming heavier and more convoluted in some ways.
They don’t seem to want to push for stability and quality, just features on top of features on top of features as long as the hardware supports it.
Meanwhile Linux, which is also growing in size specially with new file system and driver support, let’s you tailor the OS however you want. The more you know how to do it, the farther you get.

Win8 is the beginning of the end for Win. I didn’t believe Win10 support would end until the official announcement. They just fixed critical bugs and made it as stable as possible to close🤯. But, Win11 isn’t a full-fledged alternative to Win10 in terms of stability.
