## Summary

A weekly Linux and open source news roundup covering: Linus Torvalds shutting down AI ban discussions in the kernel mailing list, stating Linux is not an anti-AI project; Debian 13 (Trixie) dropping 32-bit x86 support with final support ending June 2028 for Debian 12; FreeBSD completing its transition to a fully permissive BSD license by removing the last GPL component; System76's Cosmic Desktop progress including frosted glass, gaming improvements, and tiling enhancements; KDE Plasma 6.8 adding server-side drop shadows via Kwin; a new X11 server written entirely in x86-64 assembly using AI assistance; an AMD GPU performance regression (42x slower for compute tasks) in Ubuntu's kernel 7.0; and bcachefs officially dropping its experimental label while announcing plans to gradually rewrite parts in Rust.

## Questions this post answers

### When does Debian drop support for 32-bit x86 (i386/i686)?

Debian officially dropped 32-bit x86 support starting with Debian 13 (Trixie). Final support continues only through Debian 12 Bookworm's lifecycle, ending June 30, 2028. 32-bit ARM and other specific ports remain supported. Users needing 32-bit x86 support afterward should look at Slackware, Void, Alpine Linux, or Gentoo, which may require manual configuration.

### Is Bcachefs still marked experimental in the Linux kernel?

No, Bcachefs creator Kent Overstreet removed the experimental label from the project's website, declaring it ready for general use after bug reports slowed significantly and remaining issues became rare. Bcachefs merged into Linux kernel 6.7 in 2024 but was later removed from mainline and shifted to an out-of-tree module due to maintenance disputes with Linus Torvalds over patch review practices.

_Developers evaluating file systems can follow milestones like this on daily.dev before committing to Bcachefs._

### Why did an Ubuntu kernel update cause AMD GPUs to become much slower for compute tasks?

A performance regression in AMD GPU kernel version 7.00 made AMD GPUs up to 42 times slower for compute workloads like AI image generation using ROCm. The bug did not affect gaming or general desktop use and was already fixed upstream, but Ubuntu shipped the affected kernel anyway because it contained important security patches, with the performance fix arriving in a later kernel update.

_Anyone running AMD GPU compute workloads can watch for kernel regressions like this on daily.dev before updating._

> In my opinion, shutting down AI ban is motivated by the following:
>
> * the kernel won't be able to update as quickly without AI automation
>
> * code quality and security need to be improved. Bugs that humans couldn't see were considered safe. But AI sees them, and disabling or limiting AI doesn't solve security problems
>
> * and yes, Linus understands that if he go against the community, which is people who support development using AI, he can lose Linux. The community will create a fork, which is perfectly legal
