# LittleJS is 2D and 3D now

**[Hacker News](https://daily.dev/sources/hn)** · 4 min read · 130 upvotes · 2 comments

## Summary

LittleJS, the small dependency-free HTML5 game engine, has shipped its biggest update yet: a full 3D renderer that shares the canvas with 2D rendering, letting objects from both mix freely with shared physics, children, and timers. New built-in 2D and 3D level editors, a one-line particle effects library, and reworked rendering (batched WebGL2 sprites, instanced 3D drawing) make it faster, verified against PixiJS, Three.js, PlayCanvas, Phaser, and Babylon.js in a new open WebGL Engine Bench. The engine also gains AI-focused tooling: a LittleJS AI toolkit with starter templates and agent instructions, a Claude Code plugin that scaffolds playable projects in two commands, a LittleJS GPT for no-code game building, and an arcade of 50+ open-source example games. A new site, littlejsengine.com, demos all the features, and a third community game jam is running October 2 to November 2.

## Questions this post answers

### Does LittleJS support 3D rendering now, or is it still 2D only?

LittleJS now supports both 2D and 3D rendering in the same engine and canvas. The update adds meshes, shape builders, terrain and voxel maps with collision, shadow maps, colored lights, fog, reflections, and custom shaders. 3D objects use the same physics, children, and timers as 2D objects, so a 2D UI can sit over a 3D scene, or vice versa. A Three.js plugin is also available for those who prefer that renderer.

### How fast is LittleJS compared to other JavaScript game engines like PixiJS or Three.js?

LittleJS matched the fastest paths of competing engines and beat them in several tests, according to a new open-source WebGL Engine Bench comparing LittleJS, PixiJS, Three.js, PlayCanvas, Phaser, and Babylon.js on two scenes (moving sprites and lit cubes), measuring how many objects each engine holds at 60 fps. Results vary by machine and workload, so running the benchmark yourself is recommended.

### What AI coding tools work with the LittleJS game engine?

LittleJS ships a dedicated AI toolkit with starter templates, helper modules, and agent instructions compatible with Claude Code, Copilot, Codex, and Cursor. A Claude Code plugin installs in two commands and generates a complete playable project with no server or npm install needed. A LittleJS GPT also builds games inside ChatGPT with no code at all, and an arcade of 50+ open-source starter games is available.

## Community take

How the wider developer community reacted, aggregated from 1 discussion and 37 comments across hackernews (as of 2026-10-15).

**TL;DR:** Most of the discussion is a long, heated argument about whether AI-assisted game development is legitimate or 'slop,' with relatively little direct reaction to LittleJS's actual 3D/2D feature update itself.

**Sentiment:** 30% positive · 25% mixed · 45% skeptical

**The case for**

- Some see offloading tedious engine/boilerplate work to AI as a natural evolution, similar to compilers replacing assembly.
- A few mention enjoying building small games with LLM assistance and that it lowers the barrier for hobbyists and non-coders.
- The new website and demo were called impressive and convinced at least one skeptic to try the engine.
- Using an existing engine like LittleJS is seen as faster, cheaper, and less buggy than having AI generate an entire engine from scratch.

**The pushback**

- Several argue prompting isn't real creation and worry AI-driven development leads to 'slop' and lazy, low-quality output.
- Concern that AI tooling removes the hands-on journey (hand-coding, debugging, learning) that gave past developers genuine satisfaction.
- One commenter noted input lag in the jump demo, suggesting a responsiveness issue (though this was clarified as not a real bug).
- Worry that easier AI-assisted creation could flood the space with mediocre or forgettable games.

**By community**

- hackernews (heated): A large, contentious subthread debates whether AI-assisted coding/game-making counts as real creativity or joyless 'slop,' overshadowing direct feedback on the engine's new 3D features, though a few comments do praise the site, demo, and community.

**Hottest debate:** Whether using AI/LLM assistance to build games constitutes genuine creative work or is just low-effort 'slop,' independent of whether gamers actually care.

**Open questions**

- Does the audience for a game actually care whether its code (as opposed to its art) was AI-assisted?
- Can tools like LittleJS plus AI scaffolding produce games with lasting creative merit rather than disposable, forgettable projects?

**Highlights**

> So based in reality. I don't really understand people enjoying doing stuff with prompts, either they're very mediocre or there must be something else. There's also the question that usually some famous game mechanics existed because of trial and error, line after line of hand coded stuff, and patterns emerging as you see fit from the code to the test, if all you do is prompting and piling slop over slop I'm afraid what we have ahead won't be fun, in any industry really

> In the end you are moving a bunch of electrons. With or without AI. You are just annoyed by AI. But creativity has nothing to do with AI or no AI.

> i have a good answer. you can create a game from scratch with ai, but that will take much longer, cost more, and be buggier, because about half the code is usually the engine itself. so not only is it a ton of code to write but it's a lot to debug and test. that said, it's a lot of fun writing your own engine from scratch if you are into that kind of fun. but if you want to make a game, why write the engine also?

> It's interesting that while gamers are pretty critical of games made with AI/LLM assistance there are some game developers really going full steam ahead (pun intended) with coding agents for game development. The website redesign is incredibly cool too, sure it starts the fans on my potato of a laptop (and stutters a bit) but it runs well enough that it's actually made me interested to give it a go. I'll save everyone a click and encourage them to check it out too, not just the blog post: https://littlejsengine.com/ EDIT: And it looks like there's an ongoing jam for it too, mentioned in the blog post: https://itch.io/jam/littlejs-jam

> I feel like creativity of humanity is highly dependant of the tools that are available. 8bit computers with their strenghts and limitations were one such tool. Flash was another. I feel like 3D never landed on anything even remotely similar. In theory you can do anything in 3d. In practice, it's hard so you tend to gravitate to stale mechanics and bland styles that were done a thousend times. This lack of limitations combined with complexity of making anything even remotely creative in 3d caused IMHO 3d games to never achieve any significant fraction of the creativity that 8bit and Flash stuff contained. Then again, I really haven't tried Roblox.
