# Loop Engineering for RAG Generation: iterate top-k one at a time

## Summary

Most RAG pipelines send all top-K retrieved chunks to the LLM in a single call, even when the first chunk already contains the answer. This piece introduces a sequential feeding regime — send top-1 first, check a typed sufficiency signal (answer_found, complete_answer_found), and stop early if satisfied. A deterministic dispatcher routes each question to either sequential or batch mode based on parsed question shape: factual lookups (dates, amounts, booleans) use sequential and can cut input token costs by ~65%; listing and comparison questions require batch. The sufficiency signal uses two booleans rather than a confidence float to avoid model-to-model threshold drift. The loop also includes a budget exit to prevent runaway token spend. The dispatch decision is kept deterministic rather than LLM-driven to preserve auditability.
