# Mainline video capture and camera support for Rockchip RK3588

## Summary

After over five years of development and 25 patch iterations, mainline Linux support for the Rockchip RK3588 video capture (VICAP) unit has landed. Collabora, working alongside Bootlin, Rockchip, and Ideas on Board, drove the rkcif driver through multiple major reworks and renamings before it was accepted. The Rockchip MIPI CSI-2 receiver driver also landed in mainline. Three remaining gaps are: RK3588 VICAP MUX-TOISP unit support (direct hardware path to the ISP), a new rkisp2 kernel driver for the RK3588 ISP (being developed from scratch), and libcamera IPA support for the full image processing pipeline. In the interim, users can use the libcamera software ISP as a stopgap.

## Questions this post answers

### What is the current mainline Linux status of video capture support for the Rockchip RK3588?

The rkcif driver providing basic RK3588 VICAP support was accepted into mainline Linux after more than five years of development, 25 patch iterations, and three renamings. The Rockchip MIPI CSI-2 receiver driver also landed in mainline. Still missing are the VICAP MUX-TOISP unit driver, a new rkisp2 ISP kernel driver, and libcamera IPA support for the full image processing pipeline.

_Engineers enabling RK3588 camera pipelines on mainline kernels track these driver milestones on daily.dev._

### Why is the RK3588 ISP vendor kernel driver not being upstreamed to mainline Linux?

The RK3588 ISP vendor kernel driver is not upstreamable for various reasons. Rockchip provided a stripped-down alternative that supports only memory-to-memory operation and debayering, useful for hardware bringup but insufficient for mainline inclusion. The plan is a new rkisp2 driver developed from scratch by Collabora, Rockchip, and Ideas on Board, targeting all ISPs of the RK35 generation.
