# MariaDB Foundation: TAF Now Supports Embedded Database Configuration in User Properties

**[MariaDB.org](https://daily.dev/sources/mariadb-foundation)** · 4 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

MariaDB's Test Automation Framework (TAF) now lets database configuration be embedded directly inside the user properties file, instead of requiring a separate database config file. Three configuration sources are now ranked by priority: an external db_config_file (lowest), an inline config block in the user properties (middle), and a command-line override (highest, always wins). Whichever source wins, TAF generates a temporary config file, uses it to start the database, and archives it with results, improving reproducibility. A follow-up post will cover TAF's auto-generated, fully resolved user properties file produced on every run. TAF now supports MariaDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL, and the post closes with a Hetzner hardware sponsorship acknowledgment and an open call for other database vendors to adopt TAF.

## Questions this post answers

### How does TAF decide which database configuration file to use when multiple sources are defined?

TAF uses a three-tier priority system: an external file referenced via taf.db_config_file has the lowest priority, an inline database configuration block embedded in the user properties file overrides it, and a command-line --db-config-file argument has the highest priority and always wins. Whichever source wins, TAF generates a temporary config file, uses it to start the database, and archives it with the results.

### Which databases does the MariaDB TAF testing framework support?

TAF supports MariaDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL, enabling full multi-database workload testing and reproducible performance runs across all three. It was engineered and validated on Hetzner hardware, including an Intel i5-13500 host and an AMD EPYC 9454 host, to expose real performance behavior across these database engines.

_Teams comparing database performance tooling across MariaDB, MySQL, and PostgreSQL can track updates like this on daily.dev._
