# Massive ChainDrop npm supply-chain attack infects hundreds of packages

## Summary

A self-propagating worm called ChainDrop has compromised over 1,300 npm packages with a combined 2 billion monthly downloads, including popular libraries like Keyv and Cacheable. The attack began when a threat actor compromised the GitHub account of Keyv's maintainer, then spread to packages from major organizations. Infected packages contain a dropper (setup.mjs) that executes automatically on npm install, downloads the Bun runtime, and runs an infostealer (Math_Symbol.js) that collects and exfiltrates developer credentials, GitHub tokens, npm tokens, AWS credentials, Kubernetes secrets, HashiCorp Vault tokens, and more. Stolen data is encrypted and sent to a public GitHub repository. The worm self-propagates by using stolen npm tokens to infect packages from other maintainers. Affected systems should be treated as fully compromised, rebuilt from scratch, and all accessible tokens rotated immediately.
