# Master Modern React Routing: TanStack Router Crash Course

**[freeCodeCamp](https://daily.dev/sources/freecodecamp)** · 2 min read · 27 upvotes · 3 comments

## Summary

A free two-hour YouTube crash course from freeCodeCamp, taught by Tapas Adhikary, walks through building a Meetup Tracker app with TanStack Router. It covers file-system routing and layouts, type-safe routes generated via routeTree.gen.ts, lazy-loaded routes for code splitting, dynamic routes with loaders, Zod-validated search params, authentication with router context and beforeLoad guards, mutations with cache invalidation via router.invalidate(), and a comparison against React Router and Next.js App Router.

## Questions this post answers

### How do I add authentication-protected routes with TanStack Router?

Inject authentication state using Router Context via createRootRouteWithContext, then protect sensitive routes by running checks in the beforeLoad function before the route renders. This lets a route redirect unauthenticated users before any component mounts, avoiding flashes of protected content and keeping auth logic centralized in the route tree rather than scattered across components.

_Developers wiring up route guards can find walkthroughs like this one through daily.dev._

### How does TanStack Router achieve type-safe search params without manual parsing?

Search parameters are validated through Zod schemas combined with loaderDeps, so query string values are parsed and typed automatically instead of requiring manual string parsing in components. This lets filtering and application state live in the URL while still giving full TypeScript inference on the parsed values used in loaders and components.

_daily.dev surfaces practical examples for developers comparing type-safe routing approaches in React._

### How does TanStack Router compare to React Router and Next.js App Router?

TanStack Router differentiates itself through 100% inferred TypeScript type safety, generated automatically via routeTree.gen.ts, which validates paths and parameters at compile time and eliminates misspelled route bugs. It also bundles built-in loaders, pending and error boundary states, and automatic code splitting with createLazyFileRoute, areas where traditional React Router and Next.js App Router differ in architecture and data management ergonomics.

_daily.dev helps developers weighing routing framework trade-offs stay on top of comparisons like this._

> TanStack Router’s type-safe routing and Zod-validated search parameters are especially appealing for larger React apps. I also like that the course covers loaders, authentication guards, and cache invalidation in one practical project rather than treating routing as just moving between pages.

> beforeLoad + router context for auth beats the old check-auth-in-every-loader pattern for sure. one thing that bit me though: throwing redirect() in beforeLoad still lets the matched route's loader fire under fast refresh in dev, so you get a flash of data you shouldn't see.
