# The Rise of Proof-Based Hiring

## Summary

The traditional degree-based hiring filter is losing relevance in tech, but the shift to skills-based hiring is slower in practice than in rhetoric — a Harvard/Burning Glass study found only 1 in 700 hires is actually affected despite 85% of companies claiming to use skills-first approaches. Research shows skills-based hiring is five times more predictive of job performance than education credentials. For developers specifically, proof of work — shipped products, consistent GitHub history, open source contributions, and documented milestones — is increasingly the decisive signal. The practical advice: build publicly, ship consistently, and maintain a coherent professional profile that makes your work findable and verifiable.

> This proof-based hiring has there for many years, however there are many more challenges compared to traditional one. Very scare resources compared to overall pool. Also the one who has proof may be going for multiple places or planning for own as well

> I would rather work with someone that lacks any degree but shows engagement in the industry (own projects, self taught, excitement about tech, sense of humor etc) and lots of potential. Unfortunately this is hard to spot if you haven't actually worked in the industry and I think this is where most of this falls apart. Loosely speaking, if you haven't been the role you're hiring (or similar), I don't think you should be hiring a person into that role.

> 100% agree. Degrees are so extremely inflated nowadays... Honestly, from my experience as of now, I would probably see a lot of education more of a downside, than an upside, if seen by itself on a CV...

> However, telling someone to just "build publicly and ship consistently" ignores a massive structural barrier. That advice assumes you already have the luxury of stable internet, constant electricity, a reliable laptop, and the financial safety net to work for free. For graduates in resource-constrained environments, "building in public" isn't a simple choice, it’s an expensive, uphill battle against high data costs and infrastructure deficits.

> at this point it just feels like someone is pushing this propaganda to work more to get more work. I mean don't we have our own life? Am I supposed to work for 10 hours a day? It's not that serious, we are not building some rocket. I have open source contributions, good leetcode profile, a rank in a national level hacakthon (i was solo) and all of this just to get a minimum wage job? Are you kidding me? Where is the hiring based on skills? Why is the industry obsessed with the number years of experience?
