# MCP vs API Explained: Do You Really Need MCP?

## Summary

MCP (Model Context Protocol) and APIs are often misunderstood as competing technologies, but they serve different roles. APIs remain the underlying mechanism for service communication, while MCP adds a standardized 'execution layer' that AI agents can discover and reuse across multiple applications. Without MCP, each AI app must build its own integrations for every service — 2 apps × 10 services = 20 custom integrations. With MCP, each service gets one MCP server and each app gets one MCP client, dramatically reducing duplication. The model never directly calls APIs; it only decides what action to take, and the execution layer (MCP server or custom code) performs the actual call. MCP is most valuable when multiple AI applications need access to the same services. For single-app or one-off tasks, direct API integration remains perfectly valid. Two caveats: context cost from loading many tool descriptions, and the need to properly secure API keys in the execution layer.

## Questions this post answers

### What is the difference between MCP and just giving an AI agent API documentation?

Both approaches require building an execution layer that actually makes API calls, since the model itself only writes text describing what it wants done. Giving an agent OpenAPI docs educates it about available calls but leaves you to build the execution layer yourself. MCP instead provides a pre-built, reusable execution layer with a standardized action menu that any compatible AI application can discover and reuse.

_Comparing agent integration approaches like this is easier to track by following daily.dev's coverage of MCP and API tooling._

### Does MCP replace traditional REST APIs?

No, MCP does not replace APIs. An MCP server sits in front of an existing API as a translator, calling the same underlying API that always existed while exposing a simplified, AI-friendly menu of actions. The API itself stays exactly where it is; MCP just standardizes how an AI application discovers and invokes it.

_Developers weighing MCP against direct API calls can keep up with these architecture debates on daily.dev._

### Why would a team choose to build an MCP server instead of just wrapping API calls in their own internal service?

Building an internal service in front of an API works but creates a private, non-standard format for describing actions and results that only your own applications understand. MCP provides that same wrapping idea using a public, common format that many AI applications and clients already speak, so a Slack MCP server, for example, can be reused across multiple apps without redesigning integration logic each time.

_For teams deciding between custom integration layers and open standards, daily.dev tracks these MCP tooling debates._
