# Measuring soft navigation web vitals

**[Sentry Engineering](https://daily.dev/sources/sentry)** · 12 min read · 0 upvotes · 0 comments

## Summary

Chrome now reports web vitals for soft navigations, the client-side route changes inside single-page apps, and Sentry's JavaScript SDK v11 captures LCP, CLS, and INP for each one by default. Previously, web vitals only covered initial page loads, leaving most of a session unmeasured since about 62% of page views in Sentry's own app are soft navigations. Chrome currently defines a soft navigation as a user-initiated action that changes the URL and produces a visible paint, and only Chromium 151 and later report it, covering roughly three in four route changes in Sentry's app. In that app, p75 LCP is 2.48s across all navigations but 1.17s for soft navigations alone. Upgrading to SDK v11 and filtering by 'Soft navigations' in the web vitals dashboard surfaces this previously invisible data.

## Questions this post answers

### What is a soft navigation according to Chrome's definition?

Chrome defines a soft navigation as one meeting three criteria: it is initiated by a user action, it results in a visible URL change, and the interaction produces a visible paint. This differs from a hard navigation, which is a full page load or reload handled by the browser, and from back/forward navigations. Soft navigations are common in single-page applications where JavaScript handles routing via the History or Navigation API.

### Which browser versions support reporting web vitals for soft navigations?

Only Chromium 151 and later report web vitals for soft navigations. This means current soft navigation metrics describe only that slice of users, since the feature is Chromium-only and still evolving as origin trials and heuristics continue to change. Sentry's JavaScript SDK v11 captures LCP, CLS, and INP for each soft navigation on supporting browsers by default.

### How do I enable soft navigation web vitals tracking in Sentry's JavaScript SDK?

Upgrading to Sentry JavaScript SDK v11 with browserTracingIntegration enables soft navigation web vitals by default, since this relies on span streaming which is also default in v11. Each soft navigation gets its own LCP, CLS, and INP reported as spans on the navigation span. To disable it, add Sentry.webVitalsIntegration({ softNavigations: false }) to your integrations.
