Air-cored inductors used in radio circuits are prone to inductance shifts from mechanical movement, thermal expansion, and vibration. The traditional fix is Q-dope, a polystyrene-based solution that dries into a rigid, low-dielectric coating to stabilize coils. Since Q-dope is no longer commercially available, a DIY substitute can be made by dissolving packaging polystyrene in solvent, though caution is advised due to fumes and flammability.
